The story of Kota is one of gallantry, culture, and a long-standing commitment to justice. Situated on the banks of the Chambal River, Kota has evolved from a 12th-century principality into Rajasthan’s industrial and educational powerhouse.
The foundation of the Independent State of Kota was laid in 1631 when Rao Madho Singh, son of Rao Ratan of Bundi, was appointed ruler by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. For centuries, Kota stood as a hallmark of Rajput power. The city's original protective mud-wall at Akelgarh eventually gave way to formidable fortifications and the "Garh" (fort), symbolizing the shift from prehistoric tribal lands to a sophisticated royal state.
The formal judicial system we see today began on December 7, 1938, when Maharao Ummed Singh II declared the establishment of the Kota High Court.
Inauguration: January 1, 1939.
First Chief Judge: Rai Bahadur Rambabu Saxena.
Legacy: Other notable figures included Lala Daya Krishna and Chief Justice Rai Bahadur Bhagat Jagannath (1944).
Originally functioning from Jhala House in Surajpole, the District & Sessions Court eventually moved to the iconic ‘Lal Kothi’.
Architecture: A magnificent heritage building constructed between 1870–1875.
History: Formerly a property of the Kota State, it was handed over to the Government of Rajasthan after Independence and remains a living monument to Kota's legal history.
